‘ JOM ! .. DERMA DARAH sebelum puasa’
Donation date: 29 - 31 August 2009

Assalammualaikum,
Dear Friends,

Re: The 2nd Edition of The Ansara Annual Nationwide Pre-Ramadhan Blood Donation Camapign 2008

First of all, Congratulations and a big Thank You to all area leaders, all area committee members and all volunteers for having organised and conducted the Ansara-Utusan Inaugural Nationwide Pre-Ramadhan Blood Donation Drive on Friday, Saturday and Sunday 7th, 8th and 9th September 2007, the last weekend before the start of the fasting month of Ramadhan 2007. The campaign was a huge success which all xMRSMers can be proud of.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Achievements made during the inaugural 2007 campaign :

1) A total of 2,160 bags of donated blood were collected during the 2007 campaign which is a very respectable figure considering it was our first attempt, and this is our main achievement :

1) Jusco Cheras Selatan, Kuala Lumpur 408 pints of blood
2) Atrium, Pasir Gudang Johor Bahru 279 pints of blood
3) Jusco Tebrau City, Johor Bahru 113 pints of blood
4) Mahkota Parade, Melaka 62 pints of blood
5) Centrepoint, Seremban 164 pints of blood
6) Jusco Bukit Raja, Klang 92 pints of blood
7) Jusco Kinta City, Ipoh 128 pints of blood
8) Queensbay Mall, Penang 374 pints of blood
9) Alor Star Mall, Alor Star 59 pints of blood
10) Kangar Hospital, Kangar 17 pints of blood
11) Billion Sri Mutiara, Kota Bharu 319 pints of blood
12) Terengganu Trade Centre, Kuala Terengganu 61 pints of blood
13) Kuantan Parade, Kuantan 84 pints of blood

Total number of pints of blood collected 2,160 pints of blood .

2) All the state capitals in peninsula Malaysia from Johor Bahru to Kangar conducted the blood donation drive in the 2007 campaign, and this is another major achievement in itself, and for 2008 campaign we must try as much as possible to include Kota Kinabalu and Kuching.

3) A total of 13 locations/venues were conducting the 2007 campaign simultaneously (serentak), a feat not many other organisations can match. For the 2008 campaign it is estimated between 25 to 30 locations nationwide will be conducting the blood donation drive simultaneously, probably the biggest blood donation drive Malaysia has ever seen, insyaAllah.

4) Support from xMRSMers throughout the country for the 2007 campaign was marvellous, an indication that a bigger and more successful 2008 campaign is very promising. Many SMSes and e-mails were received from xMRSMers of various chapters from all over the country wanting to help out in the 2007 campaign.

5) xMRSMers from various different chapters (cawangan) were able to work together at national and at all state levels to achieve a common noble national objective for the good of the people. For example, the 2007 campaign in Penang was headed by Dato Rosli Jaafar, a member of Ansara Seremban, and his committee comprised of members of Ansara Balik Pulau, Ansara Kulim, Ansara Beseri, etc. and they all ensured the success of the 2007 campaign in Penang. This cooperation among xMRSMers from various chapters working together voluntarily occurred in most, if not all, the state capitals during the 2007 campaign.

6) Coordination between all Ansara state committees for the 2007 nationwide campaign were excellent. This coordination between all the Ansara state committees and all the Ansara chapters throughout the nation will be enhanced during the 2008 campaign. This will be the real test for Ansara.

7) The nationwide support for our 2007 campaign came not only from the Malay population but also from the non-Malays, especially the Malaysian Chinese. It was most encouraging and this augurs well for future campaigns.

8) All area leaders and their area committee members were able to conduct the 2007 campaign in their respective areas without getting any financial assistance from Ansara Pusat. Every state leader and their committee members understood that the cost of this type of nationwide community project should be shared by all, this is the spirit (semangat) among participating xMRSMers that all other xMRSMers should be proud of.

9) Nobody gets paid and no one asked to be paid for helping to organise and conduct the 2007 campaign. This spirit of volunteerism among xMRSMers was most outstanding and a pride of all xMRSMers.

10) There were many non-MRSMers who participated and contributed significantly to the success of the 2007 campaign, whom we will refer to as ‘Friends of Ansara’. We thank them all very very much. We hope that they will join us again to help make the 2008 campaign even more successful.

11) Some of the venues in the 2007 campaigns were organised and led by non-doctors in this medically related project. The fact that Ansara architects, engineers, accountants, lawyers, journalists, entrepreneurs, managers and etc., people with no medical background, were able to successfully help organise and conduct a project of this nature without much guidance showed how resourceful xMRSMers are, and we are proud of them.

12) Sponsorship from Ansara individuals and Ansara related companies to help sponsor the cost of conducting the campaigns at all the venues during the 2007 campaign were very much appreciated and acknowledged by the organising committees and it is hoped that they will continue to support the 2008 campaign. All area leaders for the 2008 campaign should summit to Ansara Pusat Blood donation committee a list of all their sponsors to be officially acnowledged by Ansara Pusat.

13) The Pusat Darah Negara (PDN) Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur has given us an official letter of appreciation for our wonderful efforts in the 2007 campaign. They have acknowledged our capability in organising such events. PDN has given us their commitment to fully support us for the coming 2008 campaign.

THE OBJECTIVE

This annual nationwide ‘Pre-Ramadhan’ blood donation campaign was designed specifically to overcome the problem of critical shortage of blood supply during the month of Ramadhan when the majority Muslim population do not donate blood because of fasting.

This decrease in blood supply during Ramadhan is made worse by the increase in demand for blood supply because of the increase in road accidents during the ‘Balik Kampong Raya season’ This problem occurs throughout the whole country (nationwide) and it occurs every year (annually) in the month of Ramadhan.

Therefore, it is hoped that this annual nationwide blood donation campaign timed during the last Saturday and Sunday before the start of the fasting month of Ramadhan (Pre-Ramadhan) will help stock up as much blood as possible at all the blood banks throughout the country to last the whole month of Ramadhan. The donated blood can last a maximum of 42 days after the donation.

The problem is more acute in the Klang Valley area because of high population density and the fact that Kuala Lumpur is Malaysia’s major referral centre for major medical problems from all over the country.

ANSARA CHAPTERS SUPPORT

The most important and major factor that led to the success of the 2007 campaign was the strong support from many of the Ansara chapters. The initial idea that Ansara chapters were expected to help, support and sponsor the campaign at their respective ‘hometowns’ was well received and implemented.

Ansara Kota Bharu was one of the first to take up this challenge by giving the commitment to ensure the participation of Kota Bharu. In fact, Ansara Kota Bharu members supervised by Deputy National Coordinator and President of Ansara Kota Bharu Sdr Zahari Mohamed, were mainly responsible for the success of the campaign in 2 venues, Kota Bharu ( led by Sdr Alias Adam) and Kuala Lumpur (led by Ms Maznah Khamis).

Ansara Jasin members under the leadership of Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Asri Ghapar made the commitment to ensure the participation of Melaka and they did well.

Ansara Kuantan (Kuatagh) members also gave their strong support to ensure the participation of Kuantan led by Surgeon Dr Shahrol Azmi. The success of the campaign in Kuantan was reported in Utusan Malaysia nationwide. Another Kuatagh member, Sdr Zainudin Othman, and his team of exMRSMers were also responsible for the success of the 2007 campaign in Jusco Tebrau City Johor Bahru.

Ansara Terengganu consisting of exMRSMers from various MRSMs living in Kuala Terenganu joined together, led by Tun Faisal and Dr Bazlan Shafie, to ensure the participation of Kuala Terengganu and their participation was very much appreciated. They have made a committnent to ensure a bigger success for the 2008 Kuala Terengganu campaign, insyaAllah.

Ansara Seremban supported well the campaign in Seremban led by Dr Miszua Anuar. ‘A’ level students studying in the old MRSM Seremban campus and their teaching staff made up a significant percentage of the total blood donors in the Seremban campaign.

Ansara Seremban members also led the campaign in a few other states, most notably Penang led by Penang Development Corporation (PDC) CEO Dato’ Rosli Jaafar who gathered other exMRSMers from various chapters in PDC to ensure the participation of Penang which was a huge success. It is hoped that Ansara Balik Pulau will play a bigger role in the 2008 campaign in Penang especially when it is felt that Seberang Prai should be included in this year’s campaign.

Another Ansara Seremban member, Penawar Group CEO Dr Adnan Sulaiman, together with other exMRSMers, led the campaign in Pasir Gudang Johor Bahru which was another success story.

Another Ansara Seremban member, professional engineer Ir Kamaruddin Ali who was given a short notice to lead the campaign in Jusco Bukit Raja Klang and still did well.

Alor Star campaign in 2007 was led by Sdr Termizi and Sr Sazilan, it is hoped that Ansara Kulim will play a bigger role in helping to ensure the success of this year 2008 campaign in Alor Star.

Kangar was the most difficult and the last state capital to be included in 2007 campaign. Thanks to the persistent efforts of Sdr Fahroe Ibrahim from Ansara Beseri who worked hard to ensure the participation of Kangar. The participation of Kangar was important to ensure ‘completeness’ of all the state capitals in Peninsula Malaysia. Without Kangar, 2007 campaign would not be considered complete.

Interestingly, the 2007 Ipoh campaign was headed by Sdr Ahmad Faizal Azumu whom I believe was not from MRSM. We are very proud and very happy to have Sdr Faizal as one of our area leader for Ipoh for he did well there. This just goes to show that non-MRSMers are also supporting our campaign and they are most welcome to be a part of this campaign. We look forward to more non-MRSMers participating in our future nationwide campaign and they will be referred to as ‘Friends of Ansara’. We thank them all very very much. We hope that they will join us to help make the 2008 campaign even more successful. It is hoped that members of Ansara Taiping will play a bigger role in the 2008 Ipoh campaign.

Temerloh was almost included in the 2007 campaign under the leadership of Sdr Firdaus from MRSM PDRM but it did not materialise because the local Persatuan Bekas Perajurit already made plans to organise a blood donation campaign one week before our campaign which would have depleted the number of potential donors in that small town. InsyaAllah Sr Firdaus will again attempt, this time inviting the Persatuan Bekas Perajurit to join us in our 2008 campaign.

However, our inability to include Kota Kinabalu and Kuching in the 2007 campaign was our biggest dissappointment. All attempts were made, right up to the last minute, to try to include Kota Kinabalu and Kuching but we failed. We had the blood teams booked, getting the venues was not a problem, but we failed in making the right contact with the right group of xMRSM professionals living in Kota Kinabalu and Kuching.

The Ansara Pusat Blood Donation Committee in Kuala Lumpur will try our very best to ensure the participation of Kota Kinabalu and Kuching for the 2008 campaign. Without Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, the 2008 campaign will be considered ‘incomplete’. We have many xMRSM profesionals working and living in Kota Kinabalu and Kuching and we hope they will come forward to help out in this noble campaign. Ansara Sabah which was formed many years back and Ansara Sarawak should be reactivated to assist in the 2008 campaign.

The Ansara chapters are probably the biggest asset and advantage Ansara has to help make this type of nationwide community project possible. Ansara should capitalise on this potential for the good of the people and the nation. The success of the 2007 nationwide campaign speaks for itself.

Getting ALL the state capitals in Peninsula Malaysia to be included in the 2007 campaign was a huge success in itself. It is hoped that 2008 campaign will include ALL the state capitals including Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, and only then will the 2008 campaign be considered really complete and only then can all exMRSMers be proud of this achievements.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF THANKS

All these achievements cannot be achieved without the wonderful support from ALL the xMRSMers and their friends throughout the whole nation who participated in the 2007 campaign.

Our deepest gratitude to President of Ansara YB Dato’ Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir for his unwavering full support from start to finish for the 2007 campaign without which support from various other parties would have been difficult to be obtained. Dato’ Mukhriz even donated his own blood during the 2008 campaign. Our President has again given his full support and commitment for the 2008 campaign. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate our President of Ansara for winning the Parliamentary seat of Jerlun in the March 8, 2007 general election.

Special thanks to Sdr Zahari Mohamed, Deputy National Coordinator of this project and President of Ansara Kota Bharu, without whose persistent monitoring of the progress, the 2007 campaign would not have succeeded as well as it did.

Special thanks also to Setiausaha Agung Ansara Sdr Ahmad Bazlan Che Kasim (MRSM Kota Bharu) for making that critical connection with AEON Jusco that gave Ansara access to 6 Jusco shopping centres for the 2007 campaign without which the 2007 campaign would not have materialised as what had happened in 2006. And now AEON Jusco has committed 14 Jusco shopping centres for our 2008 campaign.

Special thanks also to Penang Development Corporation CEO Dato’Rosli Jaafar in Penang and Penawar Group CEO Dr Adnan Sulaiman in Johor Bahru for being the first two area leaders to immediately agree to participate in the 2007 campaign. Without Dato’ Rosli’s and Dr Adnan’s agreement to lead Penang and Johor Bahru respectively, we would not have had enough confidence to proceed further with the 2007 campaign.

Thanks also to Timbalan President Ansara Sdr Mohd Roslan Bani Amin (MRSM Seremban) , Bendahari Ansara Sdr Norhalim Iskandar (MRSM Kuala Berang); Dr Mohd Asri Abd Ghapar (MRSM Jasin); Haniza Jais (MRSM Muar); and a few others who were all effectively the central working committee for the 2007 campaign and who all worked very hard to cover various aspects of the 2007 campaign.

Thanks also to Webmaster Sdr Johari Ishak and Sdr Jalil Becker for constantly updating the information on the progress of the 2007 campaign on the Ansara website. Keeping all th information accurate and up-to-date on the www.ansara.org.my on the progress of the campaign was very important for the success of the by the general public campaign.

The information on the Ansara website is accessed not only by the xMRSMers but also Again, Congratulations and a Big Thank You to all the Ansara State and Area Leaders namely:

Ms Maznah Khamis (MRSM Kota Bharu) for Kuala Lumpur;

for their support and leadership in their respective areas without which the nationwide campaign would not have been possible.

A Big Thank You also to all their committee members and all the volunteers (Ansara and non –Ansara) from Johor to Perlis, for giving all the support to ensure the success of the 2007 campaign.

Thank you also to Sdr Amiruddin Jumaat (MRSM Kota Bharu) for getting his ‘Liga Alumni’ tosupport the 2007 campaign with a very creative incentive to encourage more blood donors from the Liga Alumni. It is hoped that Sdr Amiruddin will continue to be as creative as last year to help make the 2008 campaign even more interesting and lively.

And, of course, the Biggest Thank You goes to ALL the BLOOD DONORS who have sincerely donated their very precious blood without expecting anything in return.

It is hoped that more xMRSM volunteers throughout Malaysia will come forward to participate in all the state capitals and make the 2008 campaign even more successful. Volunteers are advised to enter the Ansara website www.ansara.org.my for further information as to how, when and where to volunteer.

From the knowledge and experience gained from the 2007 campaign, we should all be able to organise and conduct a much bigger, better organised and a more successful and impressive 2008 campaign, insyaAllah.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF THANKS TO OUR PARTNERS

Our Very Special Thank You to AEON Jusco for providing us almost half of all the venues for the 2007 campaign. Without the Jusco shopping centres, the 2007 campaign would have remained on the drawing board as what had happened in 2006. And for the 2008 campaign AEON Jusco has committed all of their 14 Jusco shopping centres nationwide to this project. Ansara must take note of this.

Our very special thanks also goes to Utusan Melayu (Malaysia) Berhad for the extensive nationwide media coverage and the material support that were given throughout the 2007 campaign that had helped tremendously in increasing the public awareness throughout the nation for the need to donate blood.

Special thanks also to Pusat Darah Negara in Kuala Lumpur and all the blood donation teams in all the state capitals for having committed most of their blood donation teams throughout the country for our 2007 campaign. For this year, overwhelming majority of the blood donation teams throughout the whole country has been committed to our 2008 campaign. Our National Blood Bank is the only bank that wants to be in the Red! Ansara must help our blood bank to always remain in the Red!.

Thanks also to all the other venues namely Atrium in Kompleks Pusat Bandar Pasir Gudang in Johor Bahru; Mahkota Parade in Melaka; Centrepoint in Seremban; Queensbay Mall in Penang; Alor Star Mall in Alor Star, Kangar Hospital in Kangar; Billion Sri Mutiara in Kota Bharu; Terengganu Trade Centre in Kuala Terengganu; and Kuantan Parade in Kuantan. It is hoped very much that these venues will continue to support the 2008 campaign.

Thanks also to the National Transplant Resource Centre (NTRC) and its National Coordinator Datin Dr Lela Yasmin Mansor for providing personnel and promotional materials and joining us in the our Kuala Lumpur venue for the 2007 campaign. Their participation in our 2007 blood donation campaign to also promote organ donation was most welcome and we hope to continue having them in our 2008 campaign.

A big thank you also to all our sponsors both at the national and state levels. They include Telekom Malaysia; Penang Development Corporation (PDC) in Penang; Penawar Group in Johor Bahru; F&N Coca-Cola (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, and many others.

Ansara must ensure that we perform our part of the 2008 campaign to the best of our abilities as not to dissappoint AEON Jusco, PDN, Utusan, all the sponsors and many others who have given all the trust and confidence in Ansara.

Ansara must not fail in this project because ultimately we cannot afford to dissappoint the families who desperately need the blood to save the lives of their loved ones, and some day that sick person could be our very own loved ones!.

PUBLICITY

The nationwide publicity that Ansara received before and during the 2007 campaign was excellent and beyond what we had hoped for. The publicity was most important in constantly creating the necessary awareness of the need to donate blood and help boost the total number of blood donors.

A very Big Thank You to Utusan Melayu (M) Sdn Bhd, radio Hot FM and radio ERA. A very special mention of Thanks to Sdr Zulkafli Bakar (MRSM Seremban) who was General Manager, Marketing/Circulation, in Utusan Melayu (Malaysia) Berhad, for his outstanding support in ensuring massive media exposure for the 2007 campaign.

We hope that the publicity and exposure for the 2008 campaign will be expanded to constantly increase the nationwide public awareness of the importance of blood donation.

THE DATES FOR THE 2008 CAMPAIGN

The first meeting in preparation for this year nationwide pre-Ramadhan blood donation drive was held between Ansara, AEON Jusco and Pusat Darah Negara (PDN) at 3.00pm to 5.00pm on Wednesday 9th April 2008 at the PDN Headquarters in Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur.

Ansara was represented by myself as National Coordinator, Sdr Zahari Mohamed as Deputy National Coordinator and Haniza Jais as Secretary of this nationwide blood donation campaign. AEON Jusco was represented by 3 of their very senior managers from their headquarters and 2 major Jusco shopping centres. PDN was represented by their most senior officer who was responsible for fully supporting and helping us in ensuring the success of the 2007 nationwide pre-Ramadhan blood donation campaign.

The main and the most important agenda of the meeting was to decide the dates of this year’s 2008 nationwide pre-Ramadhan blood donation campaign. Two sets of dates were discussed.

The first set of dates was Friday, Saturday and Sunday 22nd 23rd and 24th August 2008. The second set of dates was Friday, Saturday and Sunday 29th 30th and 31st August 2008.

The second set of dates falls on the Merdeka long weekend with the following Monday 1st September 2008 being a national holiday. That Monday 1st September 2008 is also expected to be the first day of the fasting month of Ramadhan. This second set of dates may be a bit inconvenient to some of us because it is a Merdeka long weekend followed by the first day of puasa the following Monday. This may be inconvenient to some of us who may have family holiday plans or work commitments.

The first set of dates will be more than one week away from the start of the fasting month of Ramadhan. PDN is of the opinion that this first set of dates is considered too far away from Ramadhan and may defeat the purpose and objectives of our campaign.

The main purpose and objectives of this camapign, that we must constantly be reminded of, is to collect and stock up as much blood as possible in preparation for the expected severe shortage of blood supply during the whole month of Ramadhan because the majority Muslim population do not donate blood during Ramadhan because of fasting. The severe shortage of blood supply throughout the whole country during Ramadhan will be made worst by the expected high rates of road accidents during the ‘Raya Balik Kampong’ season which will increase the demand for blood.

Platelets is a component of the donated blood which is very important in saving the lives of patients with bleeding problems. Platelets, after being donated, can only last not more than 4 or 5 days after which it will discarded if not used. The more important red blood cell component of the donated blood can only last between 35 to 42 days after which it too will be discarded if not used.

Therefore, PDN has requested that the second set of dates, i.e. Friday Saturday and Sunday 29th 30th and 31st August 2008 be chosen as this years’s nationwide pre-Ramadhan blood donation campaign to make the campaign as close as possible to Ramadhan, only then will it be more meaningful and relevent. The 3 senior managers from AEON Jusco too were more keen and very enthusiastic towards choosing the second set of dates because from their experience and previous records, they are very confident of a bigger than usual crowd at all their Jusco shopping centres throughout Malaysia during the Merdeka long weekend which will help boost the number of blood donors for the campaign.

AEON Jusco is a very very important partner in our nationwide campaign as they will be providing and commiting a total of 14 Jusco shopping centres for this year’s campaign, more than half of the expected total number of between 25 to 30 venues for the 2008 campaign. These 14 Jusco shopping centres throughout peninsula Malaysia will form the backbone of our nationwide campaign upon which other venues from other state capitals will be added on.

Therefore, myself, Zahari and Haniza on behalf of Ansara were more than happy to oblige to PDN’s and AEON Jusco’s request that we fix the dates of this year’s Nationwide Pre-Ramadhan Blood Donation Drive to be on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday 29th, 30th and 31st August 2008.

Area leaders who find these dates inconvenient due to family, work or other commitments and not able to participate in this year’s campaign, please let us know early so that we can work together to find a capable replacement to ensure the nationwide campaign proceed as planned.

However, we do hope very much that last year’s state/area leaders will be able to continue leading their respective areas for this year because the knowledge and experience gained from last year will be most invaluable. Area leaders need not necessarily have to be at the venues throughout the 3 days. The most important is to help to plan, organise and to draw a timetable for the volunteers as the volunteers too may not be able to commit the full 3 days.

1, 2, OR 3 DAYS CAMPAIGN

However, the 3 days campaign only applies to Jusco based venues. It has been a tradition of many years for AEON Jusco to conduct the blood donation drive over a 3 day period. So, Ansara has to oblige to go along with AEON Jusco for the 3 day campaign at all Jusco based venues.

For non-Jusco venues, area leaders and their area committee members may have the freedom to decide whether to conduct the campaign one day, two days or the whole 3 days from 29th to 31st August 2008 depending on:

1) The number of days that the venue/premise owners can accommodate us,
2) The available number of days the blood donation teams from the government hospitals can allocate to our campaign,
3) The availability of our Ansara volunteers,
4) The population density, expected crowd and the expected number of blood donors.

Area committees are to inform the Ansara Pusat Blood Donation Committee any decisions and any new developments made to ensure proper nationwide coordination for the 2008 campaign

29) - to be decided - Kota Kinabalu

30) Boulevard Kuching

All the 14 Jusco based venues throughout Malaysia have already been booked and committed to the 2008 campaign.

For non-Jusco venues, all area leaders and their area committee members are required to rebook and reconfirm their respective venues as early as possible to avoid dissappointments.

Area leaders or any person who finds another venue to be very suitable to be included in this year’s campaign will be most welcome to propose to us for a favourable consideration and further planning.

It will be proposed that each venue in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Klang areas, a total of 9 venues, will be assigned to a particular Ansara chapter. That is, one Ansara chapter will be assigned to take care of one venue.

For venues outside Selangor, it is hoped that the Ansara chapters will continue to take care of their ‘hometowns’ eg. Ansara Kota Bharu will continue to take care of Kota Bharu, Ansara Kuantan (Kuatagh) will continue to take care of Kuantan, Ansara Balik Pulau will assist Dato’ Rosli Jaafar to take care of Penang and Seberang Prai, Ansara Kulim will assist in Alor Star, Ansara Seremban will continue to take care of Seremban’s Centrepoint and Jusco Seremban 2; etc.

For Johor Bahru, with at least 4 venues for the 2008 campaign, and since there is no established Ansara chapter with Johor Bahru as its ‘hometown’, it is proposed that Ansara Seremban (the oldest MRSM) member Dr Adnan Sulaiman will continue to lead Pasir Gudang, Ansara Kuantan (3rd oldest MRSM) member Sdr Zainuddin Othman will continue to lead Tebrau City, a doctor from Ansara Kota Bharu ( 2nd oldest MRSM) will lead Jusco Permas Jaya and another Ansara chapter to lead in Jusco Taman Universiti with backing and support from their respective Ansara chapters. So it will very interesting to see Johor Bahru to be taken care of by 4 different Ansara chapters, insyaAllah. Any better suggestions will be most welcome.

This is a tentative list, there may be additions or deletions as we go along depending on the situation. Ansarians are much encouraged to give feedbacks and opinions on this list. All updates, discussions, feedbacks and new developments will be posted in the This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it e-group and the final decisions posted on the www.ansara.org.my website.

THE BLOOD DONATION TEAMS

The blood donation teams in the respective area will also need to be rebooked and reconfirmed as early as possible to ensure that they are not committed to other events during our 2008 campaign. The PDN headquarters in Kuala Lumpur is already in the process of informing all their state level blood donation teams in all the major state hospitals throughout the country in preparation for our 2008 campaign.

EXPENSES 2007

The topic of expenses incurred in conducting the inaugural Ansara-Utusan nationwide pre-Ramadhan blood donation 2007 campaign has been a bit tricky. When the project was first proposed in 2006, it was based on the previous experience that the cost of organising a blood donation drive should be very minimal. The project should not be a financial burden to any area leaders and their area committees for the reasons stated below :

1) Venue: As far as we know, no venue owners or managers ever charge any rental fee for the use of their floor space for organising a blood donation drive because they all understood that this a community project for the good of the people. In fact, most venue owner consider this blood donation drive as a good thing and beneficial for them as they will get free publicity and will bring in the crowd and indirectly increase sale at their shopping centres. Some of the venue owners even provide tables and chairs for our use with no charge. If you are lucky they will even provide free drinks. So the use of all the venues are all free of charge. No cost here.

2) Blood Donation Teams. All the blood donation teams comprising of doctors, nurses, lab technicians and assistants from the government hospitals with their specialised trucks bringing in their own tables, chairs, beds, computers, equipments for blood testing, blood bags, storage facilities and disposables are all paid for by the Ministry of Health (MOH). Sometimes they are given overtime pay and allowances by the MOH. They are always happy and grateful to us for helping them organise blood donation drives because those blood donation teams badly need the blood to supply to the hospitals throughout the country. They have a certain number (quota) of bags of blood that they must obtain within a certain timeframe to ensure a continuos supply of blood for needy patients at the hospitals. So for all the blood donation teams from all the governmet hospitals – No cost here.

3) Drinks and Snacks. All the blood donors, after donating their blood, should be given some drinks and snacks to help re-energise them. All the blood donation teams from the government hospitals have allocations from the MOH to buy drinks and snacks not only for the blood donors but also for all their staff and the volunteers at the blood donation drives. So for drinks and snacks – No cost here – unless you want to buy something extra special drinks and snacks for the donors which is optional.

4) Posters. The blood donation teams from the government hospitals have ready made standardised posters to promote the blood donation drives for our use. We just need to fill in the blanks as to the place, date and time of our blood donation drives. We can paste the posters anywhere we want. So, even the posters – No cost here – unless you want to have your own specially designed banners, buntings or posters which can be quite costly.

5) Banner and Buntings Banners and Buntings are quite costly depending on their size, design and number of pieces. Prior to 2006, I could not afford the banners and buntings and so I did not make any but the blood donation drives were still successful. But if some companies are willing to sponsor those banners and buntings, they are most welcome to do so. So the cost of banners and buntings were not in the original calculations as they were not considered as essential items.

6) Goody Bags Pusat Darah Negara (PDN) is of the opinion that that Goody bags are allowable but not encouraged. PDN does not seem to encourage the giving away of Goody bags to blood donors because it will make the donors quite reluctant to come to blood donation campaigns that does not give any goody bags. It may create an unhealthy competition between various NGOs where blood donors will only donate blood at blood donation campaigns that give the most expensive Goody bags. There will come a time when the NGOs could not afford to give away Goody bags anymore which may dissappoint the donors. The donors must not be made to expect gifts for their donated blood. They must be made to feel that their donated blood will be used to help save the lives of needy patients. It is an obligation for all healthy individuals to help sick people. So the Goody bags were also not in the original calculations. However, if area leaders and their committee can afford it and they are able to find sponsors for the Goody bags, by all means, proceed with it but don’t be too lavish. For area leaders and their committee who cannot afford Goody bags and could not find sponsors, please do not worry about it and forget about the Goody bags. A big thank you and a big smile to the donors will be good enough. But if any companies are willing to sponsor things like keychains, mugs, caps, mini-towels, T-shirts, pens, vouchers, bottled drinks, cakes, etc., to be given away to blood donors, by all means, take it and give them to the donors.

7) Lunches. Lunch for the voluteers and blood donation team members during the blood donation drives is something I feel that we as organisers are obliged to provide, although it is not compulsory. It is a matter of courtesy that we as organisers should provide lunch packs or lunch vouchers for all the volunteers and all the blood donation team members. This is the least that we should do to show our appreciation to the volunteers and the blood donation team members for their participation in the blood donation drives that we organise. This is where I feel that sponsors are most needed. Cash contributions should be directed to this matter as first priority.

8) Entertainment. It was never envisaged that entertainment would be a part of our blood donation campaign. It was never thought of in the past. However, the creativity and resourcefulness of our members in Ansara Kota Bharu resulted in them having ‘Gamelan’ and a school band performing in the blood donation 2007 campaign in Kota Bharu. Even Penang had a mascot wearing a red suit in the shape of a drop of blood going around Queensbay Mall to attract people to donate blood. Amazing! and very Imaginative!. We hope to post photos of these in the Ansara website. However, these entertainments can be quite costly and it was never in our original calculation. Only area leaders with extra cash can afford it.

There are many companies controlled by exMRSMers that contributed to the success of last year’s campaign and I hope Ansara Pusat will make efforts to officially acknowledge all their contributions. It is hoped that more exMRSM related companies will come forward to make this year’s campaign even more successful than last year, insyaAllah

However, after having said all of the above, and as far as I know, no area leaders had asked for any money from Ansara Pusat to pay for the cost incurred in organising the blood donation drive in their respective venues for the 2007 campaign. They all understood that the cost of this type of community project for the benefit of the rakyat should be shared by all of us and the Ansara chapters have been very supportive in this matter. This is one of the things that all xMRSMers can be very proud of.

b>EXPENSES 2008

For this year 2008 campaign, money matters at the national level will be handled in a more organised manner. Deputy President Ansara Pusat Sdr Mohd Roslan Bani Amin (xMRSM Seremban) and Ansara Pusat Treasurer Sdr Norhalim (xMRSM Kuala Berang) will handle this matter and will announce their proposals in due time. Any suggestions and ideas with regards to budget, sponsors, reimbursements and other money matters from the state area committees would be most welcome.

SUMMARY OF PLAN OF ACTION FOR THE 2008 CAMPAIGN

1) The Venues. Managers or owners of non-Jusco venues need to be contacted and the venues need to rebooked and reconfirmed by the area leaders as soon as possible to avoid dissappointments. This is priority number 1 (All the other 14 Jusco venues have already been booked, confirmed and committed to the 2008 campaign).

2) Area leaders need to reactivate their area committees.

3) Reestablish contact with the officer-in-charge of the blood donation teams from the hospitals and confirm the dates with them. The Pusat Darah Negara Headquarters in Kuala Lumpur should have by now informed all the officers at the state level for the 2008 campaign.

4) Government departments, companies, factories, universities, colleges and etc need to be contacted and be informed to secure some ‘pledged’ blood donors for the 2008 campaign.

5) Publicity leading up the event needs to be planned, eg posters at strategic places, banners, newspapers, radio etc. to encourage ‘walk-in’ blood donors.

6) Volunteers, xMRSMers as well as non-MRSMers, need to be encouraged.

7) Timetable for volunteers, as to who will be available at what time and date, to man the venues during the event need to be drawn up. 8) Potential sponsors at national and state levels need to be informed early as to give them time to make allocations for the 2008 campaign. Sponsored items can be in the form of cash, drinks, food, promotional materials, goody bag items, etc.

9) Contact and communication with the Ansara Pusat Blood Donation committee in Kuala Lumpur need to be maintained regularly to update each other on the progress of the 2008 campaign.

10) Each area committee need to nominate at least one member with an active e-mail address to be included in the This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it e-group to represent their respective area committee to regularly be updated and to exchange notes on any new developments and progress of the nationwide 2008 campaign and to ensure proper nationwide coordination.

11) Each area committee need to regularly check the www.ansara.org.my website to ensure the information on their respective areas are always correct and up to date.

A PRIVILEGE

Ansara is privileged to have been presented with this rare opportunity to organise and conduct this blood donation campaign on a nationwide basis in conjunction with the Merdeka Celebration long weekend. The last Saturday and Sunday before the start of the fasting month of Ramadhan coinciding with Merdeka Celebration long weekend will not happen again for at least another 30 years. A real privilege indeed!. Ansara must not let this opportunity to go by.

Ansara, in the 2007 campaign, has proven beyond any doubt that we do have the capability and the spirit to successfully organise such massive nationwide community project. With the full support of AEON Jusco, PDN, Utusan and many other organisations, this 2008 campaign will probably be the biggest blood donation campaign Malaysia has ever seen.

It is now all up to Ansara to prove again what we, as a group of xMRSMers, are capable of doing on a nationwide basis for the good of the nation and the people regardless of race, religion or nationality.

Once we have successfully conducted this 2nd instalment of the 2008 campaign, which we must not fail, the Ansara Annual Nationwide Pre-Ramadhan Blood Donation campaign will be set to become truly an annual nationwide event and a nationwide tradition for Ansara. It could well become another very respectable trademark for Ansara.

The Ansara Annual Nationwide Pre-Ramadhan Blood Donation Campaign

will truly be

‘Ansara’s Gift to the Nation’.

Wassalam,

Sincerely,

Dr Halim Abubakar (MRSM Seremban Pioneer batch)
Project Proposer and National Coordinator.
